About
Two and a half Millennia of well-being
The Givi Stone Bath, located in Ardabil Province, Iran, with a history of over 2,500 years, is the oldest bath in the world and possesses the most amazing properties that distinguish it from other structures. Bathing conditions in this bath are provided by carving the stones, and the entire space is covered with natural stone. To this day, some people in the area still use this bath and believe that its hot spring water has positive effects on the human body and offers many benefits. The bath’s appearance is cave-like and located on a mountainside, consisting of a rectangular space approximately 400 square meters. Another interesting and unique feature of this bath is that there is no need for any detergents for bathing, as the water makes the skin so soft and smooth that no hygienic or cleansing product can achieve the same result.

Origin of the Spa word
Given the practices performed in modern Spas, such as the use of water pools, massage, scrubs, and so on, it’s now clear that the roots of today’s Spas lie in ancient bathhouses. It’s widely stated that the word ’Spa’ comes from the town of Spa (more precisely, Spadanae) in Belgium. However, contrary to popular belief, there is no evidence of public bathhouses existed in Belgium in ancient times. On the other hand, during the same period when this town in Belgium flourished, the city of Isfahan in Iran was also called Spadana (which was shortened to Spa), and today there is much evidence showing that the historical bathhouses of Isfahan were a symbol of the glory of Persian civilization and culture. As a French historian writes in his travelogue, ’At a time when Europeans wash themselves in barrels, and a French prince boasts of not having bathed for five years, in Isfahan there are large and magnificent bathhouses like palaces.’ Among the famous bathhouses of that era that still stand today are the Sheikh Baha’i Bathhouse, Fin Bathhouse, Ali Gholi Agha Bathhouse, Shah Bathhouse, and hundreds of others. Therefore, it is possible to trace the root of the word ’Spa’ not to Belgium, but to Iran.
